The Best B&B Getaways: Glasbern Country Inn
Fogelsville is an organic farming mecca, home to the Rodale Institute, a pioneering organic and sustainable farming research center so respected among Greenies that their leader (that would be Al Gore) has consulted with its honcho. And just five minutes down the road rests Glasbern Country Inn, a pastoral sanctuary that exudes the same rustic earth-mother vibe, while quietly showering guests in amenities. To wit: Our bi-level suite included two floors of handsome old American furniture, plus a hot tub, a shower that steams then soaks a body with eight jets of water, and a fireplace, the logs for which are chopped and stacked by the staff, then set just outside the front door. We lounged about, played with the Sleep Number Bed (landing on seven, soft but firm), and then walked the few paces to the main hall’s restaurant and pub for a drink on a patio that looks out toward a hill taller than most Philly skyscrapers.
Dinner, both nights, and breakfast, both mornings, was organic and spectacular. Owner Al Granger raises most of his own protein and vegetables right here at the 100-acre Glasbern farm, and when we weren’t eating, we spent much of the weekend walking the property and playing spot-the-chefs — the white of an apron flashing like the white of a rabbit’s tail at dusk — as they picked the herbs we’d see on our plates that night. We visited the farm’s cattle, sheep and chickens, and even let the pigs sniff and nibble at our legs. Dinner that night was pork — slow-roasted and finished in a combination of fresh Glasbern herbs and sharp parmesan — and there was no guilt. Back home in Philly, the concrete looked harder than ever.
